March Goals

When I realised that today was March 1st, it dawned on me that my spring races are coming up REALLY soon. So soon that I decided I should keep reminding myself of how many days away they are on my office computer.

Knowing that my races are coming up pushes me to train harder. Really, only 32 days until my hilly Harry race? It feels like just yesterday the snow was starting to fall. Having my goals staring at me in the face is an amazing constant reminder that I have to keep pushing myself. I’m the type of girl who loves deadlines. If I don’t have a deadline and an agenda– I forget. I just have too many thoughts in my head that always come out. This is why one of my nicknames is Dory after the fish from Finding Nemo. I guess everyday is a Triple Tangent Tuesday for me!
Goals and post-its. They’re my favourite.
Last night at boot camp I really felt that I have come a long way from day one of stepping into that class. Last night I was competitive. And not with the others in the class but with myself. When we did speed intervals- I was running like I was being attacked by a dog. I’m scared of dogs. Only the ones that are bigger than me. That is pretty much all of them. When we started doing tire runs I started feeling like Kelly Kapowski in the episode of Saved By The Bell, “Zack’s War” when they are training like they are in the army. The only difference was that I had to imagine the tires because we didn’t actually have them.
I guarantee I looked ridiculous (not as ridiculous as the platypus walk) and I felt great! I’m really sad that next week will be my last boot camp session for the winter. I’ve really learned to love boot camp!
This also means that it’s the last night of coming home and having a post-workout smoothie while watching The Bachelor. A season finale and the last winter boot camp class?! It’s just crazy that they both end on the same night!
Last night’s smoothie was a four fruit (raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, and strawberry), ground flax seed, and soy smoothie. Deeelish!

Hello, Sole Mate!

Friends, thank you for all of your lovely comments, e-mails, and messages. I LOVE them ALL and they make me smile!

I had one comment about my post Break the Ice and how it sounded like an ad for Lululemon. I am not advertising for them. I am just speaking my opinion on how I feel about my recent purchases. I love a lot of different products for running and Lulu just happens to be on the top of my list. Everyone has a company that they fall in love with because the company’s products are designed with all their favourite details and what they look for in a product. The mentioned products just happen to have my favourite details for those certain products.

I have also been asked to give my opinions on different types of running shoes. I find that the beauty of shoes is that there is a sole mate for everyone. Everyone has a different type of foot and therefore will need either more cushioning or stability depending on the way they run, how high their arches are, etc. My opinion on a shoe will probably be completely different from someone else.

I love my latest shoes, the “New Balance 760 Stability.” They are perfect– for me.

Yes, that is dirt on my leg that I got during my run.

I highly recommended going into a store like the Running Room, where they will take the time to assess your stride and foot type and direct you to the pair of shoes that just might be your perfect mate.

Runner’s World also has their own Spring 2011 Running Shoe Guide that you might find helpful!

Also, this was the last song I heard at Boot Camp last night. Is it sad that I kind of consider it a power song? It just makes me SO happy!

My sole mates also love to vote for me everyday for the BEST HEALTH MAGAZINE’S BLOG AWARDS! You can join in the fun HERE!

You Wanted My Soup du Jour!

First– Thank you for all the Valentine’s Day LOVE!!
I hope you guys keep that lovey dovey feeling all year round!
I was also asked ,”how do you make that spinach soup that made you so strong and your guns look like Popeye?!” OK, no one actually said I have huge guns like Popeye it was more like, “Do you have that recipe for your spinach soup?”

Why, yes, yes I do!

Cream of Spinach Soup

Serves 6-8

Ingredients:
1 large onion, peeled and chopped
5 large plump garlic cloves, peeled and chopped
2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
750 ml (or 1 1/4 pints) of cold water
1 tsp salt

1 lb of spinach, washed and large stems removed
2 oz margarine
3 tbsp flour
750 ml (1 1/4 pints) of milk
1/2 tsp of freshly grated nutmeg
freshly ground black pepper
6-8 tbsp of creme fraiche or sour cream
warm foccacia bread, to serve

Place the onion, garlic and potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with cold water. Add half the salt and bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Remove from the heat and add the spinach. Cover and set aside for 10 minutes.

Slowly melt the margarine in another saucepan, add the flour and cook over a low heat for about 2 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the milk, a little at a time, stirring continuously. Return to the heat and cook, stirring continuously, for about 5-8 minutes, or until the sauce is smooth and slightly thickened. Add the freshly grated nutmeg, or to taste.

Blend the cooled potatoes and spinach mixture in a food processor or blender to a smooth puree, then return to the saucepan and gradually stir in the white sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper and gently reheat, taking care not to allow the soup to boil. Ladle into soup bowls and top with spoonfuls of creme fraiche or soured cream.

Serve immediately with warm foccacia bread.

As for those splotches you’ve been asking about– here is how I noticed them: I am constantly noticing anything that appears in my skin because of my history with skin cancer. But these splotches were pretty big and I just noticed them when I was leaving the locker room to go have a steamy date with my t-mill. So, like any crazy person would, I took a picture of them so that I could keep my eye out on them.

I haven’t seen those splotches come back yet so, I’m hoping it was just a one time crazy thing. I’m not worried about it yet– I’m just keeping an eye on it.

Last nights workout- BOOT CAMP! And I found that I am attractive when doing a platypus walk. You’re right- I’m not. One day? Maybe, even?

And The Nominees Are…

It’s one of my favourite times again. It’s award season! Today the Academy Award nominees were released for 2011 which means- I’m going to have to catch up on my movie watching!

I could only imagine the feelings that all of these artists are going through as they wait to hear their name on  TV or a live streaming. (Thank you, oscars.go.com) I wish their was video documentation of the different artists jumping up and down as they hear their name being announced. Ahhh, AA my countdown to Sunday February 27th is ON! In 33 days I will be watching all the elegant gowns and tux’s and saying to myself, “I wish I was there!”

Here’s to hoping that I watch all of the nominated movies by then. So far I think I have only seen three… eeks!  I clearly have a lot of work to do.

AND THE NOMINEES ARE…

And yes, my killer boot camp lady kicked my butt again last night. As I was watching The Bachelor last night I said, “Wow, that wasn’t so bad. I don’t feel in pain at all!” And then as I walked around this morning I could feel my muscles have been worked. Espcially in my glutes. Thanks for another glorious butt kicking with boxing, boot camp lady!
